Performers in residence

We are very lucky to be able to host various professional performers who occasionally give performances to our students, and more details on this can be found here.

16.11.16 – African Music Fusion Workshop

This afternoon the Year 10 music students from Portland Place and Wetherby Senior were very fortunate to receive a visit from Jally (, a Gambian kora player. Jally gave a performance and spoke about the West African Griot tradition. Mr Bentley then worked with Jally and the Year 10s to create a piece of fusion music, fusing together the traditional kora playing with a house beat and rhythmic contributions from the students. The Year 10s will soon be sequencing their own pieces of World/Dance fusion so this was a fantastic introduction!

19.04.16 – Piano Masterclass and Performance

This week we have been very lucky to receive a visit from Vidas Vaitkevicius, a piano student at the Royal Academy of Music just up the road from us! He ran a mini masterclass for our piano students and heard four of our pupils perform: Carla Mora (8), Faisal Alyami (8), Will Cort (9) and Sholto Nixon (12). The students received some useful advice from Vidas before he himself took to the piano with some inspiring Mozart and Scriabin, finishing with a little-known but exciting showpiece from his home country of Lithuania! We hope the event inspires all of our musicians to continue practising and striving for excellence in their music-making.

22.03.16 – Jazz Concert

Our upper school music students and school big band were incredibly lucky to receive a visit today from a professional jazz quintet: Freddie on trumpet, Chris on sax/clarinet, Rob on keys, Darren on bass and Sam at the drums. They played tunes ranging from Ellington to Parker and covered some of the set works we are studying this year including Miles Davis’ All Blues and Four. It was very inspirational and a pleasure to listen to such high-quality music making. Our very own Anton Solodchenko (Y11) also guested with the band on keys for a rendition of Beautiful Love – well done, Anton!Jazz
